The Xiang River (Xiangjiang)
The Xiang River (Xiangjiang) is the “mother river” flowing right through the heart of Changsha, China. It splits the city in half with the historic Yuelu Mountain on the west and the modern downtown on the east. It is famous for the bustling Orange Island and the city’s nightly skyscraper light shows. The Riverfront Experience
- Orange Island (Juzizhou): This is a 5-kilometer-long sandbar sitting right in the middle of the river. It is famous for a giant stone statue of a young Mao Zedong. You can walk there or take a quick train. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
- Xiangjiang River Scenic Belt: This is a free, beautifully paved green space along both riverbanks. It is a great place to take a morning walk, ride a bike, or listen to local musicians. [1, 2]
- City Light Show: At night, the tall buildings on both sides of the river put on a massive, synced light show. You can watch it from the riverbank or take a relaxing 70-minute river cruise. [1]
